Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums
Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties you’re currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!
Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.
As well as the forums New Members are invited to join Charles in the New Members Practical Advice Group On Mondays at 21:00 (UK) and Thursday at 19:00(UK)
And on that note….
I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂
Take care
The Gambling Therapy Team
PS: Let me just remind you to take a look at our privacy policy and terms and conditions so you know how it all works!

Hi Terry James. I am new here so not sure how my advice will go down, but I haven’t gambled for years and haven’t gambled compulsively for around 30 years. When I made the decision to stop, I was already in a self help group for people with problems – where someone suggested that I go to Gambler’s Anonymous. I went – not just to one meeting but to as many as I could for the first few months. Basically I decided to put as much time and energy into my recovery as I put into my gambling – and that was a lot! At first it was all I could do to resist the pull in my head to gamble again. I didn’t go to any of the places where I used to gamble and changed all my routines and contacts which could lead me back into it. Later I had to change strategies to stay stopped.
What did you give up to start gambling – can you put more energy there? Talk to people – both those close to you and those who know about the problem both on here and in your neck of the woods. I wish you well. -

For me it was a combination of GA and the help of my boyfriend. I think both of these things were crucial in my recovery.
My boyfriend has access to my online banking. He is routing for me, and will hold me accountable if I gamble. If you have someone in your life who can do this for you, please, please do it.
GA, although I only did about 7 meetings, helped me immensely. Hearing people speaking my exact thoughts and feelings made me feel like I was going to be okay.
