Hi All,
The lottery has come up for discussion in the groups a few times recently so I thought I would post soem thoughts on it here.
Firstly of course it is gambling, it involves a stake and a potential win.
Now some of the risks of continuing to do the lottery while trying to avoid other forms of gambling.
It’s a gambling addiction, once we stop our usual form of gambling then the addiction can try and find another outlet, even the lottery can become a problem with people gradually increasing their outlay until they are buying an excessive number of tickets.
When someone buys a lottery ticket then the scratch cards are always sold at the same counter and could easily become a temptation.
While a “jackpot” is unlikely a bigger danger is that small or medium win that can happen. Suddenly we have unaccountable “spare” money in our pocket. The addiction will tell us “Look your luck is in.” With all the temptations that brings.
Even if someone manages to just stick to their usual few £ or $ a week then it can still hinder recovery. We often talk about the “dream world” of the compulsive gambler, it keep sthat dreamworld alive. When I stopped gambling I had lots of things I needed to address. If I was doing the lottery then why would I need to look at any other problems coz “hey, Im going to win the lottery!”
Anyway, that’s just a few thoughts, I’m sure I have probably missed some things out.
Long story short – it’s a gambling addiction so I’d avoid feeding that addiction with anything.

not sure about how I view buying lottery tickets , Charles. I have never been one to go overboard when buying them , I usually get 20 bucks worth when the pot is around 50 thou mark. Maybe it isn’t so exciting and it would take buying a lot of tickets to compare to what I spent at a casino.FG
