Hi ,,Im Mick and I am 51 years old, I have been gambling for the last 30 years, but the last few years I have got really bad at it,,I hate what I am doing, it is affecting my health,, I live on my own witch is the big problem as I get bored very easily and thats when the online gambling hits in,,,I also go to the bookies a lot…I have never been to a casino or dont like poker or one arm bandits,,,Its just soccer and horses,, I got Hynotised before and it worked for 8 months,,went back but it didnt work the 2nd time,,,Im throwing away all my money and cant seem to stop…I have 3 kids,,,2 of them are adults now but the other is 12,,Im seperated a good few years now,,, The bookies seem to more important to me than my kids at times and I hate that,,, I know there are people out there with worse problems but I need to do something here fast,,,

Welcome to GT, Mick.
Well done on taking the first step . That’s the most difficult one.
I’m here since 2008 and if I had taken the advice I was given then I’d be rich now.
There is a lot of help available for gamblers Mick. It’s up to us to put in the work . Stopping is easy . Staying stopped is the hard bit. However, it can be done.
Christmas is a great incentive to stop. I’m hoping that this year I will have two G free months behind me by then. I notice the more I gamble the harder it is to stop and the more I lose each time. We will NEVER win our money back.
We have to accept that this is a progressive illness Mick. It really took hold of every aspect of my life.Hearing you mention your 12 year old reminds me of the times I left my boys standing at a bus stop late at night when they were teenagers and not being able to leave the slot machines to go and pick them up. They were 30 miles away.
Whatever about losing money, Mick, when we start putting gambling before our kids it really is time to call a halt to the madness.
I think your time has come to say „ENOUGH”.

yes we chatted in group today. I hope you will do the right thing and put the blockers in place and be responsible in recovery. Your children and the family deserve to be happy and if that means A great Xmas then just remind yourself of that every time you get an urge. Repeat xmas a thousand times over to remind you of the goals you want to achieve. Try visualization and use relaxation tools to keep you focused. FG

Hi Mick,

It was good to meet you in the group, well done on looking for help.

You have already had some good sugestions here, and in the group. Keep posting and let us know what positive steps you are taking. I strongly suggest you take some of those steps before pay day – I know from experieice that when i got paid then the urges were strongest.

Hello again,,,,2 weeks ago I promised myself that I was going to make 1 hell of an effort to give up this gambling,,,everytime I had hard earned money in my pocket I would just gamble it all away,,It was effecting my health and was talking over my life,,,,Im glad to say that i havent gone near or even got an urge to walk into a bookie office or do any kind of online betting,,, I feel a lot better and am able to save money again,,Im delighted with myself so long may it continue…

Hi Mick,
Congrats so far, I am alot younger but find it just as difficult. If theres one bit of advice that I would take, its definitely the phrase ” one day at a time, look no further”. I broke out after 8 months off it in september. at the moment im 9 days off it.
