I just completely buried myself in a matter of three weeks. I am 30 and make roughly 25,000 a year as a freelancer and I just dumped 15000 dollars. I can’t believe I really just lost complete control and for a whole month it did not hit me how reckless i was being. I could have stopped the bleeding but I didn’t.
I have to tell myself I can get through this but right now I finally feel the pain of losing all that money. It’s like all the self denial of what was happening is gone now and I’m left with nothing. I know I can take right action and not sabatoge moving forward. Ive had many addiction issues in the past. My last two demons to conquer are cigarettes and gambling. I have to be honest with myself and realize how severe the consequences will be but I hope it will motivate me to earn more and lead a more fulfilling life so I don’t feel the need to ever gamble again. All the time wasted haunts me not just the money. The only way I can succeed is to start to get therapy and attend recovery meetings.

I feel that way too. I am twice your age and I now realise what I could have been doing with all the time spent in gambling places chasing losses mainly.

Good that you have sought out therapy and recovery meetings. The other things you can be doing are – banning / barring yourself from places where you may be tempted to gamble, and limiting your finances so you don’t have the means gamble. If you have a trusted friend or loved one – then hand over your finances completely until you feel strong enough. But be aware this could be several months or even years. I wish you well.

      Hi Bill

You can get through this with determination and courage. You are right that the consequences of continuing are severe, and probably wore than anything you can imagine but you are here now, accepting your addiction and hopefully taking responsibility for your debt, which is a big step in the right direction.

You do not have to earn more money to lead a more fulfilling life, you already have the power to live a better life, right there within you. Controlling an addiction to gamble takes guts but the end result is fantastic, you will be stronger and more empathetic, you will be the man you want to be, the man other will want to know. Controlling the addiction to gamble can be the greatest education. I am fortunate enough to know many who have learned to control their gambling and are living very special lives, more special, in my opinion, because of what they went through

Keep posting, keep going to meetings, you are being heard

      Velvet
