This weekend was a horrible experience for me. After losing thousands at the casino, I felt like I didn’t even want to live anymore. I knew deep inside I wold never do anything to myself but still, the feeling was there. I have been gambling for so many years now, I can not count. I have lost thousands over the years and my personality and disposition changes for at least a week after my binges. My binges are few and far between but still are bad for my health. I never thought it would come to this. I have to quit and quit for good. I am getting nowhere and losing my hard earned life savings. I must stop!!!

Hi Danielle
You’re in the right place, so many of the people that use our site have felt what you’re feeling right now but they have found a way to overcome the addiction and live the lives they want to live.
Recovery is a hard road and it’s one that takes a while to travel but it sounds like you have hit rock bottom and you’re ready to do what you need to do to get past this. So, lets start with physical barriers…are you ready to exclude yourself from the casino’s closest to you? Take someone with you to do it because the last thing you want to do is to go there alone when you’re feeling this vulnerable. Is there anyone you can hand over control of your finances to while you’re feeling like this? Removing your access to cash and cards could go a long way to steering you away from temptation. Also, look at how you are spending your time, if you recognise that you are in danger of gambling have a plan ready of something you can do that will distract you (preferrably with other people rather than on your own) and make sure you can do it at a moments notice.
I can tell from what you have written that you’re feeling alone right now, let me reassure you that you’re not. There are many thousands of people from all over the world that access this site and many of them are taking their first tenative steps towards recovery just like you…you have given them a voice and you have given them hope. I know that our older members will have a few words to say to encourage you so I’m going to hand you over to them but I just wanted to say hi and acknowledge what you’re going through before I posted our official welcome…which I’ll do now.
Stay close!

Hi Danielle, Welcomed to Gambling Therapy. When I found this site I felt like I couldn’t go on living this way. I had been gambling for 10 years and I had gone through all of my savings and was lying to everyone I loved about my problem. Coming here is the first step. I will tell you what has worked for me and you can take from it what you need. Support-from this site. You will meet a lot of awesome people here that know exactly what you are experiencing and will give you tons of support. Please confide with someone close to you as they can help hold you accountable. Barriers-ask someone you trust to hold your debit/credit cards and live off a preset amount of money weekly. Limit you access to cash. Meetings- GA meetings, they are everywhere and if you can go to many different ones and see where you feel comfortable. People there are very supportive and it helps talking to other’s who are going through the same things and can share their thoughts and views. Keep posting here and reading other’s threads. It helps you immensely!!! Take care. One day at a time.

Hey Danielle
It is good you have come for help. There used to be someone years ago here with the same name..
Well done for looking for ways to help yourself today, we all here understand what you are going through as we are all here because we have a problem with gambling… Just keep breaking it down to a day at a time, just for today dont gamble. Don’t think ahead.. you only have to get through this day that is all.
If you fall down, get back up and keep trying. Welcome aboardP
