I was lying about gambling to my fiancee. I’ve lost a bunch of money over the years, starting when I was 19 and playing poker online. I dropped a couple of grand in the span of a few weeks and definitely didn’t have the means to cover it. I stopped pretty much except for trips with friends to Vegas every once and a while, or to Tulalip just north of where I live.
Casinos have never been a problem with gambling for me; I take a set amount, go through it, pay my bills on time, still have money left over for savings and nicer things. It’s online gambling and now specifically sports betting that I’ve fallen into.
As I said above, it’s not so much that I’ve lost money doing it, it’s more that I can’t be honest about it with my fiancee because I know she does not approve. It’s highlighted by the fact we’re saving for our wedding and honeymoon and every dollar matters right now. I’ve never used "our" money to do it but I’ve lied repeatedly about doing it to the point that even when I’m not betting she thinks I am. In our relationship this is one of the hardest issues we have; trust over money. Things are really great most any other time, she trusts me with tons of other stuff like fidelity, we have a good time with one another and are each other’s best friends.
So after the latest blow up where I lied about it she said that I need to find support for my problem and that she’s willing to support me all the way. I supposed this is one of several steps in getting the support I need in fighting the urge to gamble.
I’ve also lost a bunch of money on the stock market in 2008-2009 which is a form of gambling and I’m really worried that going forward my fiancee is going to be antagonistic towards retirement savings and investment of any kind because she views it as a form of gambling that I’ve lost at and therefore it’s tainted.
