Can anyone here share their experience in recovering from gambling debt to become debt-free? This has been a goal of mine for a LONG LONG time. I have found my most successful, longest lasting, clean (gamble-free) times have been when I really focussed on this goal. My recent relapse (lasting from January of this year until Nov 14th) has created a major set-back, but now I feel refocussed and I’m hoping it can last. I am currently in the neighborhood of $60,000 in debt. I know some are not that much, and some are much much more. I am curious about others success stories. How long did it take, what advice can you share, what really worked, what didn’t, etc.?
My goal will be to become debt free by Dec 31st, 2013 (basically 2 years)…
I also feel that this goal can generate urges within myself. Has anyone else experienced this? I think it may have had a factor in my recent relapse. Things were going so well and I had made so much progress in my nearly 2 years without gambling, I fooled myself into thinking I could make a few bets to speed up the end of the process and finally be debt free. Then I spent the last 10 months (ish) chasing all the losses I was incurring. Becoming debt-free can be a really positive motivator to not gamble, but if I don’t stay aware of temptations, etc. my gambling demon can turn this goal against me…
