Hi all you football and sports fans.  Those of you who like football (soccer to some!)  will know that the World Cup is about to start.  I am English and always support my countries team.  I thought I always had but in hindsight I’m not so sure……

Was I a fan if i didn’t want them to score a goal unless it’s a certain player who scored?

Was I a fan if i didn’t want them to score any more goals once they had reached a certain score?

Was I a fan if I actually wanted them to concede a goal?

Was I a fan when I occasionally actually wanted them to lose?

I did all of those things for many years as I placed various bets as I followed the fortunes of England and my local side as well.

In hindsight I wasn’t a proper football fan – I was a person who placed bets on football.

NOW I’m a football fan.  I want England to score as many goals as possible!  I don’t care who scores those goals!  I don’t want them to concede ANY!  I want them to win all of their games, preferably not on penalties!

Now I’m a real football fan, living in a football fans healthy dreamworld as opposed to a gambling one.

So now as a football fan, with the greatest respect to forum users of other nations, there is only one thing left to say:

      COME ON ENGLAND!! 😉

My passion was football as well. I used to stay up all night watching the world cup. Some of my earliest memories are those watching the world cup with my father. Because of sports betting, I can no longer watch the world cup this year. I get too angry when I watch the games. I would think that I know the outcome of the matches and if I happen to be right, think that I „lost“ money since I didn’t have money riding on the game.

Along with many other things, gambling has rid me of one of my greatest enjoyment in life.

      Hi Jack,

You may have wrote that with sadness but I have read it with a slight smile.

Awareness and self honesty are important in recovery – you have shown both. You are aware that at this moment in time it’s not a good idea to watch the World Cup and honest enough to admit that to yourself and take precautions, so well done.

Will you never be able to watch football again? Maybe, maybe not. I know in the early days I had to have a few things in place before I coudl watch a game, now I just enjoy being a football fan again. As you progress along your recovery road this will be somethign you will need to be honest with yourself about in the future.

For now, well done and keep doing whatever it takes to not place your next bet, one day at a time.
