Hi everyone,
This is my first post for a couple of years. Been on a heavy gambling binge in that time. Took my eye of recovery and thought I could control myself. About a year ago I was gambling pretty much double what I earn, digging myself deeper and deeper into debt when I won a ridiculous amount of money, enough to pay the mortgage off and enough to be comfortable for years. The bulk of it lasted one afternoon. Me, an internet account and Channel 4 racing saw to that! I’ve been chasing that money for the last year and am almost back in the poor house. Crazy , crazy , crazy.
I’m a mad gambler, have been for 25 years and I’m only 37. Since I’ve been big enough to reach up an put a coin in a slot machine. It’s not about the money for me, if it was I’d have savoured what I’d won for more than 30 seconds and done something useful with it. I wake up every morning and beat myself up about the money I’ve lost and the damage my lies do.
I’ve got lots to live for, a wife that loves me and a beautiful son. I have read lots of heart warming posts on the forum today and am struck by how much most of us have to live for if we just enjoyed our lives for what they are and work hard for any changes we want to make.
I’m going to be back and forth to the the forums for the next few weeks as I need a lot of support at the moment. Thanks for sharing everyone, I feel a bit better already.
Here’s to moving on and cutting out this awful cancer from out lives. For me no bookies = no gambling so just got to keep out of these places.
Love
Simon.

Hi Simon and welcome back.
I’m glad you have been reading the success stories here – what things are working for others that you can apply to your own situation? How about a blocker for your PC? How about being accountable for your money? I’m sure your wife would be delighted to help with that.
It’s good that you plan to stay close to support for the next few weeks, let us know the positive actioans you are taking to make your next bet less likely.
That brings me to a couple of lines I want to quote back to you…..
„…….and thought I could control myself…….“
„….I’m going to be back and forth to the the forums for the next few weeks as I need a lot of support at the moment…..“
It’s the time AFTER the next couple weeks that is important – don’t take your „eye off recovery“ again. We all need support to stop gambling. It’s important to remember that we also need support to maintain recovery, as you have found.
Keep posting.

Hi simon,
Well done on coming back. Does your wife know about your addiction? Having a strong support system helps so much, perhaps she could take over the finances for a while and give your mind a much needed rest. Access to money is not a good thing for a cg, cut that off and it’s a great barrier. I hope you get as much as I have from this site, as Charles said, there are lots of ideas for barriers and support here.
I look forward to your next post….K x
